About me

I completed a Bachelor of Art’s degree from the University of British Columbia with a major in psychology.

I experienced military service in the Military Police reserve as a Private, Corporal and Sergeant and in the regular force as an Infantry Lieutenant.

I then completed a 40-year career with the Vancouver Police Department (VPD) from 1978 to 2018.

In the first half of my policing career, I worked as a front-line service provider and later as a supervisory Sergeant.

During this period, I was also elected as President of the Vancouver Police Union for eight years, and was President at one time of the B.C. Federation of Police Officers.

Additionally, I completed a Business Management Systems Certificate at the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) and then an Associate Certificate in Mediation – which was centered on interest-based negotiation, mediation, and arbitration.

The bulk of the latter half of my years with the VPD was as a police manager – an Inspector. I commanded various sections that included a variety of units, notably; Youth Services, Gang Crime Unit, Diversity and Aboriginal Policing, and Detention Services. I was for a period the Chief Constable’s designated Discipline Authority. As an Inspector many police-community collaborations were undertaken.

As a police manger and VPD representative I became engaged with a citizens group in the creation of the Vancouver Association for Restorative Justice (VARJ). I served for close to a decade as the society President. VARJ advocated for the resolution of appropriate conflicts through the transformative power of restorative principles and practices.

At the end of my policing career, I obtained a Master of Art's degree from Royal Roads University (RRU) in Conflict Analysis and Management. My passion is to understand social conflict and how to resolve it.

On this website I also plan to post a writing over what I learned from my policing career and what I believe the path forward for policing needs to be. For those with an interest in policing and democracy I hope you find value in it.
