The Forfeited Helm is a focused commentary on the issues plaguing modern law enforcement, drawn directly from a veteran police officer’s 40-year career as a front-line officer, police union President, and Inspector with the Vancouver Police Department. The views expressed are unapologetically pro-law-and-order, rooted in a deep belief in the necessity and nobility of policing. Because the writing offers a highly specific insider perspective, it serves as a valuable case study for police reforms.

 

This project explores several core problems: fragmented and parochial services, misunderstood systemic issues, flawed civilian oversight, political interference, and media distortion. The discussion leads to a concrete roadmap for restoring true command, rebuilding institutional professionalism, earning public trust, and reclaiming the safety of our streets and homes.

 

Policing can be rebuilt. The question is whether police leaders dare to take the helm back, and whether the government has the wisdom to let them

About the Author

​

John holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology from the University of British Columbia, a Master of Arts degree in Conflict Analysis and Management from Royal Roads University, and certificates in Management Systems and Mediation from the British Columbia Institute of Technology. He was twice commissioned as an officer: first as a Lieutenant in the Canadian Army, and later as an Inspector with the Vancouver Police Department.
